Give an example of an epic and describe why it is called epic.

The epic poem has been regarded as the highest form of poetry in all ages and countries. Epic features and conventions are prominent in the epic “Paradise
Lost” by John Milton. An epic opens with invocation or prayer to deity or
Muses for blessing and inspiration to
composing the epic. At the start of ‘Paradise Lost’, The poet John Milton invokes the holy soul to guide him so that he can complete the epic with greater success. An epic starts in
the middle of the action of an epic. Here, “Paradise Lost” starts with the pitiful fall of the rebellious angles by God. Much incidents before this fall of the angels have already happened. The theme of an epic is highly importance. The theme of “Paradise Lost” is the fall of mankind and, war between God and wicked angels. The action of an epic involves extraordinary deeds in battle. In Paradise Lost, a great battle between God
and Satan occurred. The setting of an epic is in great scale. It may be worldwide. The setting of ‘Paradise Lost’ involves
Ptolemaic Cosmos or universe. The hero of an epic should be a figure of great importance. In ‘Paradise Lost’ Adam, and Eve, God and even Satan play the role of protagonists who have great importance with different races. Use of epic- simile is an element of an epic. We find ample epic similes about Satan and others ‘Paradise Lost’ Satan and his fallen crew are compared the swarming of bees.
Use of machinery is found in the role of Christ and the angles in ‘Paradise Lost’.
There are catalogues of some of the principal
characters as in Milton’s description of the procession of fallen angles in Book (I) of ‘Paradise Lost’.
