1. What is lyric or lyric poem?

➣ A lyric is a fairly short poem, uttered by a single person which expresses mainly personal thoughts, emotions, perception, feelings and experiences in recognised form (in first person narrative form).

Or,

Lyric poem is a fairly short poem which expresses the speaker’s personal emotions or feelings in the first person.

2. Give two examples of famous lyric poems.

➣ Sonnet No 18 by William Shakespeare, “Meeting at Night” by Robert Browning are two examples of famous lyric poem.

3. What is the meaning of lyric?

➣ Lyric comes from the Latin word ‘lyricus’ which means of/for the lyre. In the original Greek, ‘lyric’ referred to a song that was sing to the accompaniment of a lyre.

4. What is dramatic lyric?

➣ Dramatic lyric or poetry is form of verse which is composed to be read or performed loudly with little or more acting.

E.g.- (i) To My Last Duchess by Robert Browning.

(ii) The River Merchant’s wife: A Letter by Ezra Pound.

5. Give two examples of dramatic lyrics.

➣ John Donne’s Canonization and William Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey” are examples of dramatic lyrics.

6. What is the main difference between dramatic lyric and other types of lyrics?

➣ In dramatic lyric, the speaker addresses to another person in a dramatic situation, but in other types of lyrics, the speaker focuses on her or his own personal feelings.

7. Give two examples of lyric which express the author’s real-life experiences.

➣ Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Frost at Midnight andJohn Milton’s Sonnets express the author’s real-life experiences.

8. Whom does ‘I’ represent in lyric poems?

➣ In lyric poems, the pronoun ‘I’ may refer to the poet or on artistic creation or an invented figure.

9. What role does the speaker play in lyric poem?

➣ The speaker plays the role as the poet himself or an artistic creation or an inverted figure.

10. Name two lyric poems which or state of feeling n a more private mode?

➣ Shelley’s “To Night” and Emily Dickinson’s “Wild Nights- Wild Nights” express a state of feeling in a more private mode.

11. Name wo renowned love lyrics.

➣ Two renowned love lyrics are—
(i) “To his Coy mistress” by Andrew Marvell.
(ii) Meeting at Night” by Robert Browning.

12. What is aubade?

➣ An aubade is a morning love song (as opposed to a serenade) or a song or a poem about love loves separating at down. In another words, it is a song sung by a departing lover to a sleeping woman.
E.g.- (i) Parting at morning by Rober Browning.
   (ii) The Sun Rising by John Donne.

13. What is dramatic monologue?

➣ Dramatic monologue is a type of lyric poem in which a character reveals his/her feelings, view and thoughts to a silent person or a group of persons in an intense dramatic situation. It exposes history and insight psychology of the speaker.

14. Give two examples of dramatic monologue.

➣ Robert Browning is the father of dramatic
monologue. “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning and “Ulysses” by Tennyson are two examples of dramatic monologue.

15. What is Elegy?

➣ Elegy is a song or poem of emotion which laments on the death or absence of a person or a favourite one.
E.g.- Milton’s “Lycidas” and Shelley’s “Adonais”.

16. What is Ode?

➣ An ode is a short lyric poem that praises an
individual an idea or an event. In ancient, odes were originally accompanied by
music. The word “ode” comes from the Greek word ‘acidein’, which means to sing or to chant.

17. What is Sonnet?

➣ Sonnet is a fourteenth lines lyric poem with various rhyme scheme. Italian sonnet is divided into two
sections— octave (8) and sestet (6). English sonnet is
divided into four sections— 3 quatrains (3x4 lines) and
one Couplet (1x2 lines).

18. What is Epithalamion?

➣ Epithalamion is a poem celebrating a marriage. Actually, it is a song or lyrical poem written specifically for a bride on her way to the marital chamber.
       English poet Spenser wrote such.    Epithalamion for his wife, Elizabeth Boyle.
